Marc Chagall’s Candlestick, an especially prolific work, is a most beloved treasure in a collection of Judaic masterpieces he created, the Jerusalem Window series. The artist was referred to as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century," (-Robert Hughes) though, Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity".

Marc Chagall was born in Vitebsk, Russia, in 1987, to a Hasidic family. The eldest of nine children, he studied in heder (a private Jewish school) before moving to a secular Russian school where he displayed his artistic talent. Despite his father’s disapproval, Chagall pursued his talent in art. He went to St. Petersburg (1907) to study art with Leon Baskt. Chagall was influenced by contemporary Russian painting. His distinctive, child-like style, often of images drawn from his childhood, began to emerge. Between 1910 and 1914, Chagall lived in Paris where he studied the works of the leading cubist, surrealist, and fauvist painters. During this period Marc Chagall painted the Jewish shtetl (village), and developed the features that became recognizable trademarks of his art for years to come.
